As some of you know, I've been kitbashing an IHC UP GP18 into a CNR GP9. Thanks to help from Gauge members and a couple LHS's, the conversion went well, although I kind of botched up the decals -- they were really difficult to transfer :curse:, as you can see from the pix! Overall, this project went well and was a lot of fun.

Here is what I started with -- an IHC UP GP18:

Here is what I ended up with after the conversion -- a CNR GP9!

There is one pic of the original loco and three of the "new" CNR one.

I'm very curious to hear your feedback, as well as any criticism! I realize that I still need to finish the hand rails (they were broken on the original and I simply reglued them the best I could) and I could also add some additional steps.

Rob, the paint and lettering look good, :thumb::thumb: although my buddy Deano is going to be upset when he sees what you painted over. ;) However, I think that you would've been better off to do the repairs to the steps and handrails before painting. Although your way will allow you to develop your "touch-up" skills.:-D:-D

I admire your excellent painting and decaling job, but why waste all that effort on one of Model Railroading's WORST quality models? I don't mean to be mean, vindictive or offensive, but you just put an EXCELLENT :)thumb:) paint job on a heap of plastic...:oops: That Gutless Mehanoteknica (IHC) motor will crap our on you soon if it hasn't already. It's not worth your time, unless you cannot afford the $39.99 for a Beautiful Proto 2000 GP7, with all its detail.

Once again, excellent paint job! :thumb:

Robert, looks good, I still think CP maroon and gray or TH&B would be nice. To my mind the best looking CN loco is 6060. What you have done is a very good job.

Thanks, Wayne! I'm sure you're right about the steps and hand rails. But I guess I'll work on these slowly and might even repaint the black areas completely. I'll probably track down some small (scrap?) pieces of plastic to finish the hand rails.

If you look closely, the decals (especially on one end) are uneven, but I figure I did my best with what time I had.

Thanks, KJ! Yes, I really like the CP maroon & grey -- that's one of my favourite colour schemes. Unfortunately, I don't have too much CP (at least yet?!) -- that's one reason why I decided to add to my CN roster.

Thanks for your comments about the paint job, Miles! And no offense taken re your feedback about IHC/Mehano products!

I fully realize that for all my time and money (buying paint, decals, horns, etc.) I could have easily bought a really good new one for some $40. But I was mainly doing this for the fun of it. I like modeling, looking up proto info, checking road numbers, learning where/when the loco ran...

I believe this model is 25 years old or older but it runs well and quietly. So far, it's held up and I've been happy with my other two IHC/Mehano locos. We'll see how long it lasts!

    Thanks again.

Ahem.... ...why anyone would want to change an engine from UP to ANYTHING ELSE..... .....:eeki: ...:toug: ...:119:....

Seriously Robert, i think you did a FANTASTIC JOB on the conversion , paint and decaling:bravo: . though i agree that you should have done the repairs first, that way you would be finished with it, and not have to go back into it risking something going wrong with the areas that look GREAT:winki: . NICE JOB!:thumb:

Thanks, Deano! I sure didn't want to ruffle any "UP feathers"! I guess that's how I'd feel if someone converted a CN or CP loco into something else!

Yeah, I should have been more patient and completed the other repairs first. I'll wittle away at this as & when I have time, but I can at least run it as it is. Thanks again for your encouragement re the decals and paint job!
