Some of my airplane builds

Being new here I thought I'd post a sample of some of the card models I've built over the last 5+ years.... I hope I've figured out how to post images so lets see what happens.

These a posted roughly in historical order of when the aircraft was produced.

I want to see if this is going to work, more to come. Thanks for looking. These are all FiddlersGreen models. Most are 1:48, not all.

Thanks Zathros, I do keep them in a dust resistant glass case, so they are well protected.

I was planning on just continuing this thread with more picts.

This is a FG model of the Sikorsky S-38, twin engine flying yacht. It was a bit difficult to build but overall not all that bad.

Having worked at Sikorsky Aircraft for almost 10 years, I have a soft spot for anything with Igor's name on it. Beautiful workmanship. :)

Thanks, What kind of work did you do for Sikorsky? and where? They do have some unique designs, I've always really been attracted to their aircraft.

This S-39 and the S-38 are painted as the two ac owned by the Johnson & Johnson Corp. and were flown in world exploration flights in the 1930's I believe.

I designed fixtures for CNC machines, then made the fixtures, programmed 4 axis CNC machines, prototype work, which sometimes involved a day of programming 15 minutes of actual machining, then on to the next part. I wrote around so many programs there I stopped counting when I hit 500. I also trained people there how to run CNC machinery. I also had quite a few manual machines at my disposal. Sometimes it's just easier to machine something by hand than write a program for it. I was a mold maker, and was a Tool an Dye maker before that.

Your planes look very nice. I've always thought those airplanes from the very early 20th century are the most difficult to model. You made them great.

Thanks Ruben, I appreciate your comments.... The early models with rigging. wing support spars etc can be a real trick to pull off. Of course all you see it the finished model....and nobody really admits to having to build a model 4-5 times before it comes out right!! Which I have done several times..

The Sikorsky S-38 gave me a run for my money, I build it 5 times before it looked straight and even all around.

Thanks for looking,

Boeing Model 299, grand daddy to the B-17

This is a 1:48 of the Boeing Model 299............this is a John Dell design that I bought from FG about 7-8 years ago. It's a nicely designed kit, went together with little difficulty and really stand out in a crowd...

The B-17 is excellent. John Dell does excellent work. He is a designer that admire very much. I like his attention to detail. You did a great job on his model. I still wish your pictures were bigger!

XNView is a great program for making big pictures that have small sizes as far as kilobytes go. A 1024 x 768 picture shrunk down by XNView will fit and be under the forum's max picture size, most of the time, 800 x 600 size always work if passed through XNView. Your models are awesome Swampfox. Thanks for loading them up! :)

Thanks to all of you for the nice comments, it is much appreciated. I will try to post larger images, I'm just so use to trying to keep file sizes down, so it might take a 'nag' or two to keep it in mind. Remind me again Zathros if I don't make my next posted images larger.

Thanks again, until next posting,

B-24 "The Dragon and His Tail"

I've never been a big fan of B-24's, but I promised myself that I'd have to build at least one, IF someone ever designed at cardmodel of this famous "Highly Decorated" aircraft.

Well, about a year ago, a designer and friend, John Dell did just that!! I think that this was the prototype/Beta build for this particular model, but I'm not positive of that. Either way here are a couple of picts of the finished model as well as a diorama I did using a mixture of other card models on a wooden base that I added some "grass" and the edge of a tarmac.

I got a message telling me I'd reached my limit of picts so I'll post the diorama picts on the next message.

B-24 Diorama

This diorama was created using mostly card models. The jeep is plastic, because at the time I couldn't find a good cardmodel. Since I did the diorama, a good one has been designed..... The engine hoist is an old coat hanger and some scrap pieces from the scrap box...

bomb cart card model.jpgclick to enlarge
The bomb cart comes with some of the the John Dell B-24 models

The people are from various models.

My dioramas only last for a couple of days, after I take the pictures and enjoy the layout, everything goes back to various boxes, shelves, storage where ever I find some room. I have no dioramas sitting around, not enough room to keep them setup.

Your dioramas are incredible! You take the models way over the top, and AirDave's accessory vehicles are top notch. They add much to the whole scene. I would love to have some of these big enough to use as background screens on my computer, as I am sure many others would. Great work!! You should put links to were you got all this stuff from. I know Chris would appreciate it, as would AirDave, (His work is topnotch! :)

Thanks Zathros, I will get together the info on the links for these Airfield accessories.

As for AirDave, heck, don't loose any sleep over his attitude, in the world of the web/internet we're all just a bunch of electrons. One click of a button and we're all gone;-) Like you said, he does good work that I can use. Thanks AirDave;-P

I'll make that post about the Airfield diorama accessories later today.

Really excellent looking builds swampfoxx. I just added that B299 to my list of kits to build. The B24 was already on it :)

I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future.
