I am about to begin airbrushing my tracks a lovely rust colour that I mixed last night. Now I see why it would have been smarter to do this before I laid the track. The idea of messing up now that I've laid and ballasted, and even started scenery has turned what should have been a point and spray operation into something rather more nerve-racking.

Your work is always good, I'm sure it will be fine. Some folks say the ballast should have some rust stains and prefer to weather after ballast.

My track happens to rust to the same color of the ties for simplicity

Val , even after you paint the rails mix up some grimmy black and shoot straight down in the middle of the ties and then pull back the brush some and shoot straight down on the outsides of the rails.
Once you get that done mix up some light grey and go back and shoot straight down and left and right on about evrey 5th to 8th tie lightly , (to vary the tie colors). If it looks to grey add a little of the grimmy black to the grey and lightly spray the whole area again.That should blend everything.
