How safe is dependent on what you put in as a cleaning solution. I've got an ultrasonic cleaner that I've used for everything from loco shells, freight cars (including wheel trucks), loco parts and full locos. Sometimes I use an abrasive cleaner on metal parts, but I normally use a liquid degreaser in water for most everything.

I think you can buy ultrasonic cleaning solutions for Harbor Freight, but I can't be sure of that.

Don't use anything but a water soluble cleaner. One time I put some solvent-based liquid in to get caked-on grim off of some parts, and it got so hot it almost ruined the ultrasonic cleaner.
