There are still state mental hospitals (Napa and Atascadero) in California--thing is, most mentally ill people are nowhere near bad enough to have to be in one. Funny, when some states closed their giant warehousing hospitals for mentally ill and gave folks support and job training, suddenly a large percentage of them WENT BACK TO WORK and showed vastly reduced symptoms of mental illness. The ones that just kicked people out and said "good luck", though, well, that's another story.
But, frankly, I'm kind of cheering for this admission--because it means that the guy WON'T be considered mentally ill, and is now eligible for the one permanent treatment that will prevent further crimes--a nice lethal injection.
