Painting the mountain

I am working on my HO set and have gotten to a mountain area where the mountains are very steep so there would be little vegetation mostly rock face, but I am having a problem getting the rock fact to come out right. I have been trying just brush painting but the colors either are too bright or too dull

. What I am looking for is some ideas maybe either for weathering or doing the rock face right.

welcome to the gauge under paint with a base color then add darker( shadows) lighter (highlights) then mist the whole face lightly with a darker color like raw umber(very dark brown) to blend areas together.
