It's understandable if you realize that they have a stretch of 37.5% grade up the line.
Also:
The coach is not attached to the loco.
The crew put on sweaters and fleece jackets halfway up.
I think they have 3 types of brakes.
 
I've been on this RR a couple of times, once back in about 1953, and once in about 1978.
We invited some friends up from Louisiana in mid July, and wouldn't you know it, the temp
in N. Conway hit the mid 90's, a rare occurrence! We were all sweatin' in our old Chevy
with no A/C on the way to the Mt. Washington base station. We hopped on the Cog
Railway, and rattled and banged our way up the mtn. When we reached the summit, the
wind was howling and the mercury was showing 50 degrees! So Jimmy and Sandra got
their cool weather after all!
