I'm eyeing some coaches on eBay and have a basic Paypal question.

As far as I can tell, if my purchase exceeds my current balance in my Paypal account, Paypal will automatically take the excess from my credit card. Does this sound correct?

I've only used Paypal a few times and just wanted to double check. I've bought two locos and several coaches -- and all (except one coach which was only in fair condition) have been excellent.

Yes, if your account is set up that way.

Hello, Be very careful who you give your credit access to. You can ruin your life easily. I am not comfortable giving credit access to paypal. Who are they anyway, to even ask for such personal info? Better for you to buy a postal money order and mail it off to a supplier. I bet this paypal is an eBay spin off, not a bank. Check it out. D

    Welcome to The Gauge, thermal:wave:

PayPal's pretty well road tested, though I understand where you're coming from.

http://paypalsucks.com/ <<< (no kidding) a site to check out for another opinion. The problems tend toward merchants rather then buyers.

Paypal IS owned by Ebay. Do be careful with paypal, even though the site maybe https, dont trust them with your bank account. I use a prepaid credit card to purchase items with, it may cost me $5 to put money on it everytime, but keeps them out of my bank acct.:D

I use a debit card - have a separate checking account linked to Paypal, I have never had any trouble. Paypal is owned now by e-bay, but that was a recent acquisition... :) The trick is to only keep a few dollars in the checking account and do not have overdraft protection...

But - no - -I would not have paypal linked to a credit card...

A friend of mine in Cleveland has had major identify theft problems that he thinks started from funds being transferred from his AE credit card to his P Pal account and it is still ongoing;the perpetrator is located in El Salvador and still trying to access his bank and CC accounts.

I'm sure the fears are not unfounded, but I've found it to be a reliable---almost expected--- way to do business now. No one I know has any complaints about it.

I think that's an excellent idea, but I'm not sure if prepaid credit cards (smart cards?) are available in Canada. I'd use this instead of a regular cc if I could. Thanks, Rob

I've been using PayPal for at least 6 years, never had a problem. I have it tied to my credit card. And I have had alot of money go back and forth thru PayPal. I buy and sell on Ebay.

Thanks, Thermal. I'm reasonably comfortable using eBay/Paypal and trusting their security. Many or most people who have used Paypal recommend it. I've only used it a couple times on eBay and I couldn't believe how convenient it was. It also at least seemed more secure because I immediately received confirmations and receipts. Still, nothing is 100% secure and I'm sure that this has been "compromised" before.

Four years ago, I had an identity theft problem. Someone, probably at a gas station, copied my debit card and pin. Then, over one weekend, they made 3 false deposits and cleaned out all the money in our bank account. Fortunately, the bank restored my lost funds, so we weren't out a penny. But it just goes to show you how easily these things can happen.

I consider eBay/Paypal to be a calculated risk, based on their track record and number of recommendations.

You should be able to get one through Western Union. Look their web site up. Thats what I use for my paypal. Its a Pre paid Mastercard. I had issues with paypal way back in the day with a bank account. Some how all my money would dissapear, with out me buying anything. I refuse to do that again, so when my spending limit is up I create a new paypal account. :thumb:

Thanks! I'll try to visit Western Union's website and find out what's available. Cheers, Rob

Just don't fall for the spoof emails that purportedly come from PayPal. I've seen some really official looking ones. Logo and all. If you get one just forward it to spoof@paypal.com, don't answer their request for your card info.
