Chain link fence

    When did chain link fencing come into common use? What were the options before that? What was commonly used?

    I'm not sure when chain link started to be used, but I think the most common fencing before chain link would be wooden board fencing.

    I remember that we had a chain link fence around the football field at our school, when I was a small kid. And our school was quite new, then. That was in the early 50's.

    At the same time the fences around other sports arenas and also around factories were almost always made from vertical wooden boards. (We used to 'get admittance' to some football games by prying loose one of the planks in these fences :D )

    So I'd say, if you model the mid-50's or 60's, chain link fences would be ok, but probably not much earlier. A see-through alternative for earlier times would be a fence made of more or less tightly woven barbed wire on concrete posts. (Don't like it - reminds us over here in Europe of photographs of Nazi concentration camps :(. )
