I AM USING CODE 83 AND THE PROPER RAIL TIES FOR ON30, MY QUESTION IS WHAT SCALE OF BALLAST SHOULD I USE ( WOODLAND SCENIC BALLAST ) SHOULD I USE O SCALE OR S SCALE AND SHOULD IT BE MEDIUM OR LARGE SIZE BALLAST ?:wave:

Most smaller narrow gauge railroads, which were the majority, used dirt and gravel from the drainage ditches excavated alongside the track. I use paver sand to represent that gravel. I have an article at:

I'm with Harold on the paver sand. 40# bag is less than $2 at Home Depot. I'm also experimenting with putting moss (from the dried flower section of Michael's or Hobby Lobby) in the blender and mixing the result into the ballast to add a tint of "weeds" and "dirt". Still experimenting, no pictures...
