This story has been unfolding via the rumor mill in the Philippine Railways yahoo group, but is now confirmed by Boone Morrison's article in th ecurrent (Sept/Oct 2004) NGSL.

Halawa, built in 1899 and Manana, built in 1916 served in HI, until 1947, when they moved to the Philippines and worked the sugar cane plantations in Negros, RP.

They are to be restored by steam expert Brook Rother in CA before returning to their homeland in HI to serve a new 3 mile tourist rail way. ETA mid 2005.

My understanding is they keep at least one steamer ready to go in case of a diesel shortage, and you can visit it, and they will even fire it up and give you a ride for a fee. They still have several that were not sold. So, if muslim radicals are behaving themselves in Occidental, I might venture that way later this month :D Probably not, but you never know. I'm more likely to go 2 ft. tram chasing on Luzon :D
