Hello all!
grateful to be on this site as I’ve seen such beautiful work coming from this community!

I personally love modelling Star Trek ships and aircraft of any variety, especially ones that double as gliders. I have a particular interest in the KI-46 Dinah, as I think it is a criminally overlooked design.

I also am just starting to actually create my own models that I hope to share here eventually. I have very little experience using programs like blender and pepakura, so I hope to be fairly active in those threads as well.

Welcome to zealot its a great place to be. Nice to hear that you will design your own models. Looking forward to see your work. Have a great time here.

Not that I’m saying I’m any good, haha. Especially since my laptop is soo old that blender crashes whenever I attempt to apply a texture.

Maybe you can try sketch up thats also a 3d drawing tool. I use inkscape for designing but thats a 2d program. Revell fan can tell you more about SU.

Hello and welcome to Zealot. You have come to the right place for all things paper (as well as other mediums). Many of our members are HUGE SCI-FI geeks (myself included). Not only that, but several member are designers (@mijob being our resident Star Wars designer) SO, I hope that will help you feel more at home here.

If you have any questions, comments, concerns, need help or advice, please feel free to ask. We will do what all we can to help you (or at least point you in the right direction).

When you do build a model I would like to invite you to post build threads of your projects. Build threads are a great way to show off your skills and techniques, as well as to highlight problem areas that you may need help with or show how you were able to solve said problem.

Once again welcome aboard. I hope that you enjoy yourself.

Hello and welcome to the forum! :)

Great to hear that you want to learn how to make your own models. This will give you so much fun and freedom. It is addictive, too.

I tried to work with Blender but I failed miserably but this was years before they completely revamped the program. I use Pepakura on occasion, though.

Have fun and enjoy! :)

I always used to draw models out using my calculator, a ruler, and LOTS of Pythagoras haha, using blender I can see the model come together pretty much in real time, and you’re right, it’s quite addicting!

What programs do you recommend for unfolding? I know pepakura is the most popular, but I’ve seen links to a few online tools as well. I’m not always connected, so an actual program works best for me.

@mijob is using his brain only as well! Major respect to all who do that. :)

I use Pepakura if the model is supposed to have a photorealistic texture and the Flattery plugin for SketchUp to make vector templates.
Whatttttt, I was using sketchup ages ago in school but I haven’t looked at it lately, is it a paid service now?

Welcome to Zealot. The Mitsubishi KI-46 Dinah is a very smooth and good-looking aircraft. We have some very interesting aircraft in our Resource section that you may find interesting. :)

If I want to keep a bitmap texture intact I use SketchUp 6 to export the model into *.kmz(4) so that it can be imported into Pepakura and SketchUp 8 and Flattery to produce vector templates. I use the latest free version SU17 to import *.stl files. Everything free, just look for the old versions.

Welcome to our band of merry men, I think RAF Cosford here in the UK has a Dinah in one of its hangars.

My brother is very interested in Japanese aircraft of all types, I feel a trip coming on...

Anyway, look forward to seeing your creations

It actually took me less time to model out the Dinah than it did to model a twin otter. The center is literally just ellipses centered on the thrust line, plus another set of ellipses for the actual canopy. Then all the flight surfaces are straight lines except for the tips. It’s such a beautiful design honestly
