Geez!! Late to the party, again! ops:
Here are a couple of photos of the visible area of the salt mines at Goderich, Ontario. The mine consists of three shafts over 1700' deep, and the 1 1/2 mile wide mine extends out under Lake Huron for about 2 miles. They also operate brine wells in this area.
The idea of mining under the lakebed was the impetus for locating GERN Industries on the shore of Lake Erie, with the unmodelled flux mine under the lake.

Sorry about that date info on the image: the pictures were taken last month - somebody had to check the manual to get rid of the date in subsequent shots. :-D We don't really have leaves on the trees in March.
