Maybe a piece of PlexiGlass across the front edge of the river to hold the water in? You could leave it there when you are done. Or just screw a piece of wood across there, but put car wax, or wax paper on it, or vasoline, so the 'water' won't cure to it, and you can remove it when it is dry...
