OK so for scale
What is your opinions about details. The more expensive brand - the better details??
Athearn must be a good buy for the money then?

I think that, in general, that statement is true. I work with N-scale, so I'm most familiar with N-scale manufacturers. Kato and Atlas, the more expensive brands, tend to have much better details (fewer molded-on pieces, finer lines, better handrails, etc.) But there are exceptions--most notably models made by Life-Like and the Bachmann Spectrum series.

Brass models tend to have the best details overall, but you really pay for them!
