the first has C.M. on back assume it means Colorado Midland.

The first one looks like they may have started to build a trestle in a straight line (the stub ended track) but something stopped them, I'm not sure but in the photo the ground looks kinda like a slide area so may have not been solid enough for a trestle.
The other looks like the trestle near promontory point in Utah. It was dismantled shortly after the driving of the golden spike when a better grade was made just further to the north and the original line was abandoned.
