What does everyone think of doing model railroading on a computer? I know it's not hands on, etc. but is it better to jump right in on a real mrr or invest in a program? (Hopefully this doesn't sound like a newbie (which I am, LOL) question.

I would be hesitant about anything more than train player...at least train player can give you the benefit of operating your layout even before you decide to build it. I've had horrible expirence with Trainz, and wouldn't reccomend it. MS train simulator is only for the big 'uns so that's out of the question. Whay not use the $40 you would waste on a 'puter porgram, and go buy some track?
