    Hi guys,

I have a Lionel smoke unit model 671 that needs to have the wire element replaced. Does anyone know what size and type of wire I could substitute to make this operational again. I tried some standard wire I had around the house but it just got red hot and broke.

This is just a guess. I think you need what is called NiChrome (nickle, chromium) wire.
You will however; need to know what the resistance of the original heating element was.
Maybe your best bet would be to find a replacement, ready made.

Thank you Jim. If I cannot find the material I will probably obtain one of these unts.

Very easy, Just buy the replacement wire heating unit from a parts dealer, they are new repros of the original and work great. I know of a few places for do it yourselfers they all can be found the net. I know of a hobby store that will install them for you, and restore old lionel stuff as well.
