How could I have 2 trains run using the conventional style transformer? I have multiple switches with an inner and outer oval track.

Would I need two transformers, one for the inner and one for the outer?

It's better to use two transformers but you can do it with just one, as long as the transformer has enough punch for the trains you're running. My Lionel 2026 and 2037 draw enough power that I wouldn't want to run them off anything less than a 100W transformer if I did that (and that may be cutting it too close). If you do it, the throttle just controls both trains. With some care, you can get away with it.

But I'd only run one transformer as a temporary measure. You can pick up a 50W Marx or American Flyer transformer to power that inner loop for $20, so that's what I'd do. Marx, Lionel, and American Flyer will all run jsut fine off each other's transformers, it's just the Marx and AF don't have the whistle controller, so they're much cheaper.
