I wish to construct a simple turnout for a trolley which will go back and forth straight and also switch to go around a Christmas Tree. Sometimes it will go around in one direction, sometimes the other around the tree, determined at random by using a timer at the switch (points). I need two timers for turning out. I'll be using switches that are non-derailing.

Jon,
either way. If a marketed product would not be appreciably more money than construction of a random timer for a turnout, then I would go that way.

Non-derailing switch

Woodie,
I'm dealing with "O" guage, Lionel specically. They, and I guess others, make switches that will turn automatically to prevent a train coming the wrong way (e.g. from a turn into a switch which is set for straight) from being derailed. Perhaps there is a newer term for that; its the one I learned years ago.
Anyway, the question is: are there randomly timed switches for turnouts?
Should I build or buy?
