This is going to sound seriously off topic, but it won't be ....eventually.

Does anyone know what the standard size of a sheet of plywood was in Great Britain circa 1940?

I don't know about seriously off topic, but it's seriously obscure !!!!

I would guess that it was 4 x 8 feet. Interestingly enough, it's still sold in the same size, but they list it as 2440 x 1220mm.

I imagine it's the same with boards. a 2x4 would be a 50x100, which isn't accurate either after planing and shrinkage. But it does sound better than 1 1/2 by 3 1/2 or 37x89

I look forward to seeing how this eventually becomes incorporated in a card model !!

  5. Here in Holland, and Europe , standard size is 122x244cm, and that is based on old English measurements..
