    Josh, Wayne, Steve, Jim, CNWman, George, Gus, and Josh(jbaakko):wav: , THANK YOU GUYS!:mrgreen: , for the complements, comments and Kind words:smilie: , REALLY, THANK YOU!:thumb::mrgreen:

    Wayne, your on the mark:winki: , the M1000 is in my sights:thumb::mrgreen: .

    CNWman, a few things for you:smilie: ,
    i really like your steamer:thumb: , and want to THANK YOU for posting the links to the real one!:thumb::thumb:

    the FIRST pic on the FIRST page of this thread has me in front of one of UP's last Gas turbines they had, the "Big Blows":winki: (i am 5'11'') sadly, NONE of the Veranda Gas Turbines were saved:frowns: , ALL of them were scrapped:eeki: , and the trucks that were on them were put on the GE U50B's:winki: . (...i have a U50B in N scale:thumb: )

    i don't have an Alco century:cry: , but i wish i did:mrgreen: , Wayne found a pair for me, but i had to pass on them to get the Veranda:winki: . my LARGE UP engines are:
    1- Veranda Gas Turbine:mrgreen:
    1- Big Boy
    2- Challengers
    1- Y3
    1- DD35
    1- DD40AX
    1- F-E-F Class 3 Northern
    1- SD90/43MAC
    ...and though they are not UP:eeki: , 2- SP AC12 Cab Forwards:thumb::mrgreen: .

    Steve(viperman), if i COULD get a REAL UP engine, it would be a SD40-2SN:thumb: ...OR an SD60M...OR....:119: .

    Josh(jbaakko), sorry, its not for loan:toug::119: , but you gave me an AWESOME IDEA!:thumb::mrgreen: THANKS!!!:mrgreen:

    My engine buying days has just about come to a close now:eeki: , Honestly, there are just a couple left on my list, and all but three of them are real expensive:frowns: , and VERY RARE & hard to find:frowns: , most are brass:frowns: . it could take me YEARS to fulfill this list:
    1- SD9
    2- 2-10-2
    3- Big Blow
    4- U50B
    5- U50C
    6- Alco Century C855
    7- C630
    8- M10000
    9- GP15
    THATS IT, NO MORE:eeki: .

    Want to hear a real killer, the same guy i bought the Veranda Gas Turbine from ALSO had a brass U50C:eeki: , for WAY CHEAPER then the Veranda:eeki: , but i put so much out this weekend, i had to pass it up:frowns: . it really killed me to pass up the U50C because of ALL the U's made, the U50C is -BAR NONE- my favorite of them all:thumb: ...oh well:frowns: , you cant have ice cream with every meal:119: .(no...telling my self that doesn't really help:cry: )

    After MUCH THOUGHT, i am VERY HAPPY with the era i am currently modeling, 60's-79:thumb: , thus, i am NOT going to buy anymore "NEWER" engines:cry: , don't get me wrong, i really like the ones i have:winki: , but i am taking more direction in what i am doing now, thinking about my new upcoming layout that will hopefully be started this summer.

    though i am NOT going to be 100% prototypical:roller: , if i did that all my steamers i love would be gone, and many of my "older" diesels would have been scrapped by the mid to late 70's:frowns: , so thank goodness Big Ed is one to keep the old alive:winki::119: .

    Well, its getting late,and i have to be at work in a couple hourswall1 , so I'll go more into my "other" plans in another post:winki: .

    Till next time...STAY ON TRACK!:thumb:

    you're welcome!:mrgreen:

    Ok, let's see...
    The best ALCo Century unit I can find is a C424/425 from Atlas, although you could wait for the C630 and knock those two out at the same time.

    The M1000 isn't possible because that engine type never existed, although the next best thing is the M10000, although that's $500 at best.

    If you're willing, the best price I could find for a SD9 was $140 approx.

    The 2-10-2 could be kitbashed from a base 0-10-0 (although I've yet to see one) and modified into a 2-10-2, or you could buy a really cheap and poor model of a 2-10-2 and make it a whole lot better. THen there's this option:
    Bowser - HO Steam Loco Kits - PRR N-2s & USRA 2-10-2

    As for the U50B and U50C, I couldn't find anything below $700. Ditto for the tubine.

    Finally, I stumbled upon this link:
    I never knew of the ALCo C855 until I found this:mrgreen:

    CNWman:wav: , its amazing how two simple mistakes can really change things:oops::119: .

    OOOPS!:eeki: when i put down "Alco Century", i forgot to put the C855 after it:oops: , and i forgot to add another zero to M1000:119: , i have edited my post and fixed them:winki::119: .

    as far as the 2-10-2 goes, I'll just make it real easy on myself and by one of BLI's, or the one IHC makes and just add a few detail parts to it:thumb: , it comes DCC ready:winki: . going through the hassle of trying to modify steamers wheel arrangements is just way to advanced for me:119: , but THANKS for your thoughts on it:thumb: .

    As for the SD9, i think i'll wait for BLI's second run on them, UP should be one of the paint schemes in the second run:winki: .

    **Of coarse i forgot to add an engine:119: , i just added a GP15 to the list:mrgreen:.

    Looks like with some work, you could build the gp15-1 with smokey valley parts from walthers wall1

    i was working on the RG&S's new shop, when my son wanted to see it mocked up with some engines in the bays. Figured I would take a few progress shops will I was at it, since there was a UP unit visiting Crazy Larry's shop, I figured it would be ok to put them here:mrgreen:

    Jim, could you please explain this a little more?:confused:

    WOW!!:eeki: , your engine shop is looking GREAT!:thumb::thumb: i really like the engines you have in it too!:winki::mrgreen:

    Matt, THANKS!!!:mrgreen:
    Really, the "Big Blows" are my favorite of UP's Gas Turbines:winki: , but the Verandas come in a VERY CLOSE second:winki::mrgreen: .

    Heres a couple shots of my GP20:mrgreen: ,...AHHH....nothing like the older diesels...:winki::smilie:

    Well hey, if you happen to see another one, I'd like it. I need one round one, like the Lionel one, and two sloped back ones, like the OMI & Hallmark versions came with.

    You're quite welcome:mrgreen::thumb:

    I'm just curious, but just how much space does the Turbine take up on your layout? If the engines really are that huge (bet it was one heck of a time getting it home:twisted::mrgreen:), I can't imagine you being able to crank the throttle past 30 scale miles or so.
  15. UP SD40-2

    UP SD40-2 Senior Member

    Josh, I'll keep me eyes peeled:winki: .

    CNWman, the Gas Turbine is 17''1/2'' long:eeki: . My CURRENT layout here at home is just to small to run my big stuff:frowns: , so i keep my Big Boy, one of my Challengers, and one of my Cab Forwards at dads, his layout is pretty big:thumb: . the rest of my big engines i keep here, and i take whatever i feel like running to dads on Saturdays:winki: , i have a tool box i converted to an engine carrying case:thumb: , it fits about 6 large engines in it:mrgreen: .

    Deano, is your DD40AX an old Bachman unit?

    Another Q, I was just looking at pics of dd35A's, how close is the athearn dd40 to these, any Idea?
  18. UP SD40-2

    UP SD40-2 Senior Member

    Jim:wav: , YES, that is an "old" Bachmann DD40AX:thumb: , but it was NEW when i bought it:winki::toug::mrgreen: .

    As for the Athearn DD40's, here's MY take on them, i consider them to be DD35's:winki: , they are so close in looks, and are even numbered & lettered the SAME as UP's DD35's:thumb: . the only thing missing on them are the rear sand box's, like the DD40AX's had, ALTHOUGH, i DO have pics of some of them WITHOUT the rear exterior sand box's, THOSE look JUST LIKE Athearns DD40's:winki: . BOTTOM LINE, i consider/call mine a DD35:winki::mrgreen: .

    FOR THE RECORD...(OR, "Engine Spotlight")

    Well, with all the talk about the Centennials & DD35's, i looked them up in a couple of my UP books tonight, and since i am "the UP guy":mrgreen: , i figured i better set everyone straight on a few things:winki: . FIRST, i have been wrongly calling them DD40AX's:eeki: (i know, shame on me:oops::119: ), REALLY they are: DDA40X's :thumb:

    Here's what that means:
    DD= the wheel arrangement, two four axle trucks
    A= wide nose
    40= designates the engines(prime movers)
    X= modular electronic components

    UP was the ONLY road that had the DDA40X's, and there was a total of 47 of the twin diesels, made from 1969-71:thumb: .

    AS FOR THE DD35's...
    UP was the ONLY ROAD that had the cab versions of these:winki: , there was a total of 15 cab versions, and UP had 27 cab-less versions of them(B units), SP had 3 cab-less models of the DD35.

    Sadly i don't have any pics i have taken of the DD35's:frowns: , but i DO have some pics i have taken of the DDA40X that is at the IRM:thumb::mrgreen: .
