Welcome, Bob! That's what got me started as well - you just can't find (affordable) kits when you get outside the few really popular model subjects.
In addition, paper's cheap enough for you to regularly clear the shelves (local libraries, school teachers, etc. would likely love to have what you've made). And, if it gets broken during handling just fire up the printer, sit down with the culprit for a team build, and make another one.
