How come when I log in to the home page, the reported number of new posts differs from the actual number of new posts? Does this happen to anybody else? For instance, today on the home page, next to my avatar It told me there were 34 new posts. However, when I click on "New Posts" it always comes up as a lot less. Again, in todays case it was 18. Clear as mud?

It means you're visiting The Gauge more often than the server software thinks you should. 
The individual cookie sets how many new posts show up in the new post search (when you click on the "New Posts" link up top), but the portal page counts how many new posts are in a specific time period.
