Just picked up one of the new Life-Like SW-8's in the Santa Fe black and silver, zebra stripes today and I must say it looks fantastic. Nice detail, painting, but it is noisy as heck, especially at slow speed. And running it for an hour in each direction and putting a little lube on the gears made no difference. And it will only pull about 5 cars on level track.
This is in far contrast to the last LL engine I got which was one of their latest
GP-20's. It's quiet and pulls like a horse right from the get go.
    Anyone else experience this?

My CPR SW8, SW900, All 3 SW9/1200 and my GN SW9/1200 all run very well with little noise and all have no problem pulling 12 cars on straght level track.
All are DCC equipped and prior to conversion (Which removed the weight in the cab in order to fit the decoder into the unit) would each pull 14 cars.
It sounds to me that you have a duff (sick) switcher on your hands.
BTW, all my rolling stock is weighted to NMRA RP20.1 weight standards.
If the unit is new, I suggest that you send it back for repair.

Thank you for your reply and good information.
I have already called my hobby shop and they have ordered a
    replacement for me.
I love the looks of this little gem as Life-Like did a fantastic job on
    the detail and painting.
Glad to hear you're happy with yours which gives me hope that
I will get a good one.
    Thanks again,
