Back in junior high I prepared a database with every locomotive (including how many cars it could pull) and every car on the roster. It was somewhere past 50 at the time...but some were non-operational. It was quite a bit of fun.

As of today, I'm sitting at 54, my son has 23, so combined roster of 77. Got in shipment of 16 today from Ebay, most will go to paint for NS. Trying to type around them as they're on my desk. Got 4 IHC steamers from rommelvon this past week, great looking engines. Waiting on shipment from runcooper from the estate of his father-in-law, he counted 42 on display, not sure how many were boxed up. I want that Blue Goose set more than anything. So after said and done that will put me at 96'ish. I'll take a roster pic when they're all here.

Buy some boxcars, alreddy!! (or just go brass!) :D :D :D

BTW, Aardvark's in Nashville is open on Sundays until Christmas!

IAIS64 Hey George, could you show a pic of the F40PH? I bought a Spectrum, which is
probably good enough, but would like to see the Walthers for comparison, if'n it
ain't too much trouble!! Walthers' pic doesn't reveal much about the detail.

Cidchase,

Plenty of good photos of the Walthers Trainline F40PH here: http://www.trainweb.org/asamtrak911/model/amtk338.html

It's definitely a better-looking loco than the Spectrum.. The Spectrum F40 has a number of deficiencies:

- The fans are not like anything EMD has on their engines.
- The front truck is not in the right place (it's centered under the cab ladders on the prototype).
- The rear anticlimber is not contoured correctly.
- The front plow is too flat.
- The Spectrum Blomberg truck sideframes are rather crude compared to the other makes (Athearn, P2K, Walthers, Kato, etc.)
- The grab irons are flush-mounted.

To its credit, the newer Spectrum F40PH does have a nice-running mechanism, it's DCC ready, and it has the flashing strobe beacons.

The Walthers looks nicer, but the front truck is still not exactly in the right place. It's not DCC-ready so conversion will take a bit of effort.

I think the Kato F40PHs are the nicest looking ones.. Trucks are in the right place, details look right, Katos are great runners (goes without saying), and they are DCC ready. The Katos are worth the extra money IMHO.

Hope this helps!

Cidchase -

Better go to the link Tom gave for a look - my F40PH is undergoing some work and is currently in pieces!

Sorry.

Having seen all three, I would agree with Tom that the best is the Kato, followed by Walthers and then the Bachmann. If I needed another, I would go with the Kato.

Just MHO.

Good luck with what ever you decide on!

Thanks very much, Tom and George! I see what you mean from the pix. My budget was purty strained was why I purchased the Bachmann, sorta dropped the "dough" without waiting for the buck. I'll just have to see how it goes. The plow really did stand out as bein' not too good. It does seem to run well. :)

Didn't mean to grab your thread, Gasser! Let's see some more rosters!!:D :D
