Location of yard 'oil column'

I recently bought a die cast kit for an engine service yard oil column. It is a nice little detail but I realize (don't laugh now) I don't know exactly where these devices would have been located or what/how it was used! Can you advise please.

I think that the oil column of which you're speaking is for fueling oil-fired steam locomotives, and its most logical location would be at a servicing facility like a roundhouse or turntable. There should also be an oil tank(s) nearby, although these were sometimes underground.
