Linux used to have major sound issues in the past. It is often a default setting that doesn't work with you system.

If it is a problem just open the sound manager and play with the settings a bit. If that don't work go to the ubuntu forum. It is very good for specific problems. Just put in your hardware spec AC97 whatever it is and a answer will appear.

I have RedHat version 9 something running on my server in the garage. It is out of support and I have been toying with going to a different version.

Does anyone know if Ubuntu will install over redhat and leave all my settings intact? I hate the though otf having to reconfigure SendMail, Apache and all of the other things I have configured over the years.

I couldn't tell you. Ubuntu does have a server specific dstro and it is long term support. Ask at the ubuntu forums there could be a script or something to be found.

I doubt it. Installing Ubuntu ( or any other Linux distro ) will wipe your entire partition.
Most Linux applications have hidden directories where data are stored.
When I reinstall Ubuntu I make a copy of the hidden directory .evolution so I at least don't loose my emails.
I don't have an Apache web server nor any Sendmail email server so I'm incompetent on that subject.

My geekness attracted me to this thread:) Good to see people having good first time experience with Linux, and RonP, nice suggestion on Ubuntu, I think its one of the best out there for ease of use, upgradability, ...

Just an fyi to any of those out there who need/want to install Windows but hate the price. Just buy the oem version. Vista 64 bit Ultimate only costs under $200 as opposed to $319 for the version you find in your local retail store. The only catch is the owner of the oem, you are responsible for the customer support. Honestly though, in over 8 years of using various microsoft windows machines, I've never once used MS's help desk, which from what I hear is pretty crappy anyway.

    About upgradability:
I started using Ubuntu about 3 years ago and upgrading from one version to another always gave me problems with the " restricted" Nvidia graphics card drivers: they never works after upgrading.
If you don't use 3D graphics hardware acceleration it's not a problem, but I need them for Blender ( great free 3D animation program similar to 3dS Max ) , playing the very addictive artillery game Scorched 3D and doing some ( little ) C++ 3D graphics programming using the OpenGL libraries.
Sometime I even had that problem when updating the Nvidia drivers within the same version of Ubuntu

I didn't install those restricted drivers on my Mom's computer ( I doubt that at 85 years of age she would program rotating cubes wit OpenGl lol ) and upgrading has never been a problem.

Conclusion: If you are using Nvidia or ATI drivers be prepared to install from scratch every time there is a new version of Ubuntu.

I'm glad the last Ubuntu release ( 8.4 ) is a LTS ( long time support ) version , that means I won't upgrade until the year 2011.
