just i quick question... i'm building my first N gauge layout and so far have a ply/timber basebaord. i have some lino available to me and i thought it might make a good roadbed (and it's free instead of buying some cork). has anyone tried this?

You think the ballast would stick to it? That would be my concern. Fred

Ha Chip, IMHO, linolium is to hard/dence for roadbed, it needs to be soft to deaden sound. What you have is more than likely vinyl rather than linolium, which is a very old type of flooring made from linseed oil and clay. While vinyl flooring is softer, I'd still use the cork. It can be bought in rolls pretty cheep at homecenters.
