Lima Locomotive Works No. 1 Shay Class 65-3 Geared Logging Locomotive
I uploaded this and the Climax loco so you could see the dfference in the gearing.. The gears and axles of the Shay are actually attached to the "Gears which are part of the axels of the engine. This allows the horsepower (Tractive Effort) to be applied directly to all axels evenly.. This allowed the Shays to climb steeper grades and haul more tonnage.. while moving very slowly compaired to other logging locomotives.
