I doubt the guy would ever bother trying to enforce his patent with sites like Fiddler's Green. I'm betting he would only break out the patent and lawyers if there is another site trying to compete directly with his business model. His "business" is less about paper models and more about promotion. If he is trying to negotiate a contract with GM (one of his current customers he mentions in the video), he can say to them "I have the patent" in order to keep GM from finding another company to create the same promotional item cheaper. I do think that if another company wanted to challenge the him and compete with the same "paper model promotional toy" idea, the patent would not stand up in court. This conversation also opens up a whole can of worms with trying to define who a "pirate" really is BTW. There is no evidence the guy did not hire someone to design the models for his business. Most of the models on his site are of public domain subjects. Note sure why anyone one should call him a "pirate" unless he is stealing someone else's work directly. Sad as it may be to admit, most of us on this forum could be considered "pirates". There are numerous models linked to in this forum that are of copyrighted subjects of someone OTHER than the one distributing the model. For example, of the dozens of Star Wars models out there, who has paid Lucasfilm for the rights to distribute a paper model online of the Millennium Falcon. Does not mater if it's a free download, it's still a copyrighted design. Distributing and/or downloading the unlicensed model is "piracy". I see people defend the rights of the designer when their model is being distributed on eBay without permission, but I never see anyone defend the rights of the real copyright holder. This hobby can be a bit hypocritical sometimes. Just like the resin garage kit hobby, which is famous for people creating unlicensed kits, and then complain that someone has recast their kit. Sorry to get off topic a bit. Bottom line, I doubt this patent thing will ever have any effect on anyone here. Time for me to get back to building my "pirated" model.
