Kitbasher's Diary - On30 Coal Tender

Hi everyone!

This has been my first attempt at an On30 model…

My friend Ken gave me this little Bachman Porter engine, & I thought it might be fun to build an auxiliary tender to extend its range, so to speak…

I’ve had this little cheapo HO bobber caboose laying around for 10 or 12 years now, & that looked like it might have some potential…

I removed the body, steps, railings, & horn hook couplers, & used some styrene to fashion a new deck, measuring 12’ x 6’ in O scale…

Next, I added some paint & weathering, & added the weight from the original model…I moved it a little off-center, so it would be hidden by the coal bunker…

I cut some strips of balsa to build the coal bunker, & added styrene strips for outside bracing…I also chopped up an old N scale tank car, to serve as an auxiliary water tank on the rear of the tender…

To hide the weight on the inside of the coal bunker…

I covered it with some sculptamold, painted it black, & then sprinkled on some real cpal that I had crushed up with a hammer…

I added a ladder & water hose…

And finally, added some new couplers…

Now I just need to build a layout to run it on! :D
