A lot of my artist-friends talk about how effective vent-art is at, well...venting, your emotions. Normally, I wouldn't think that paper modeling would provide me with a proper analogue, but I think I've found the right subject this time. So, I guess, given how I've been feeling recently, this can be considered my own vent art

My subject this time around is the Kaiten suicide torpedo, specifically the Type 1--the only type to see regular service. I've decided to try something new with this design; doing step-by-step instructions instead of the usual diagram with arrows thing I usually do.

The model parts are arranged sequentially, so each page is a progression from the last. Each page contains pieces for just one portion of the model; for instance, page one contains the bow pieces (warhead, forward bulkheads, etc.), the second page containing parts for the crew compartment and conning tower, and so on. On each page are instructions explaining how to assemble the portion contained on said page.
TL;DR I hope these instructions are better.

Finally finished the last bit of the Kaiten itself. Probably going to do a stand for it as well, if I can figure out how exactly I'll pull that off.

Model comes with a base fashioned after the deck of a generic IJN carrier sub:

Very neat! When I was young I read a book written by a Kaiten pilot who was preparing to go on a mission when the war suddenly ended. He was quite emotionally shook up and felt like a failure for a while.

I wonder if we can find an IJN sub model and scale two of these guys to fit on the deck?

Oh man, that'd be amazing if someone made a sub to scale. But either the sub will have to be goddamn huge, or the kaiten fairly tiny. sign1
By the way, that sounds like an interesting book! Do you happen to remember the title?

Also, model's up, so just follow the link: http://fav.me/d5q3qy6

Thanks for the new Kaiten, Bryan.

A sub to scale? You could always plug the links from this thread; http://www.zealot.com/forum/showthread.php?t=142798 into the Wayback Machine at the Internet Archive site, and scale that up. It would be rather huge, as you say, though.

Anyone know if the movie from the thread I linked to (about Kaiten pilots on their way to a mission) has ever been released in sub-or-dubbed form here? I can't look it up as I don't now the title. Can't read much Japanese, and I can't translate the old movie site in the Wayback because its all in Flash.

Rocketman Tan, awesome sub. our have quite a legacy of models going on. That's great!! :)

@Bhelliom, I can have two Japanese words right next to each other, and I can't tell if they are the same or different. All those languages look like they were written by a "Bizzy Buzz Buzz" to me. I think you have to be really born into that culture to read that, or be extremely intelligent! Neither of which apply to me. My "Hat's Off" to you! :)

    Beautiful model(s) Rocketman Tan.

There is a model of a IJN sub with 4 Kaiten on deck from the movie "Sea without exit" Got a zipped file with 8 pdf's inside of it. Be glad to upload it with Zathros permission. Don't know the scale. With your Kaiten on drck, would look better than theirs. In the meantime, here is a history of I-36. Would love to see the film.

Oops, didn't realize it was from U-Don's factory.

    Link to UDon's Factory: http://udonfactory.the-ninja.jp/paper/down/down.html

A possibility would be just upscaling the deck section of UDon's model as a diorama backdisplay and mounting your Kaiten's on it. Anyone can download UDon's models, as they are free, just download them from his site, out of respect.

You model stands on it's own though. You only have to build one to get the idea. :)

@Zathros, born into the culture? Nope. Extremely intelligent? I wish, but not that either! I can read just enough to sound like an idiot if I try to read anything to anyone else. That goes for a number of other languages as well, although I can read a lot more of them than Japanese.

Just as an example, I describe the Japanese characters for "download" as looking liKe a stylized "T 5 5". Thats one of the more useful things I learned to "read" before I started using the Google toolbar to translate everything for me automatically.

I vaguely remember seeing that model one time and hopelessly scouring the web for a copy! Also, I'm currently in the process of acquiring the movie! Thanks for the link!:thumb:

Hmm, Eric has the model, and you don't. Eric sends me emails all the time. I trust him. I have that model too, but don't know where it is as I really need to sort and arrange the 2 Terabyte's worth of FREE models I have archived. You never know. The people who wish to squeeze every last dime out of us seem to control the Internet too. :)
