Try NOBI DeWayne for starters
Might look at Kancho's "easy" series--they're a bit more complex than the FG models, but aren't technical time killers--you did say "short unit", right? YOu don't want kits that will take several weeks of work to complete. FG also has a whole line of inexpensive architecture. Their lighthouses and New England series are quite good, as is the NYC diorama.

I think the Nobis free models are the next step
I a newbie in carmodeling. I've began with a few free models from FG but now I'm looking a new models and for me the next logical step are the Nobi models.
