I am now free to roam the layout.

Well I am not any expert in TMCC for now but I did get the layout up and running with it. What a learning curve. One of the things I found out about after I had them installed was that the turnouts have to be powered separate than the 180-Powermaster bricks.

That resulted in few hours to take up track and rewire all of the turnouts. I do love the freedom to walk around the layout and control the trains though, which is very cool.

Welcome to 1995 :D - I'm a late bloomer with TMCC as well (2000), but I think you're definitely ahead using a TPC 400. You'll find TMCC is easy, perhaps a bit too easy- probably the main reason some folks use DCS to control their TMCC locos.

But for what it is, you can't beat the price.

I really like TMCC and DCS. Each has it's advantages, so I use both. Did you wire your switches to operate via TMCC? I have some wired that way but the originals are still controlled by control panel.

No way there are some things that just feel good and that is one of them.
