Hello All! I am new here, and I am really impressed with what I see as far as helpfulness and comradery among members. It has made me really happy to see modelers helping each other out. Before I post the pictures of my layout (I have done some poking around and noticed what you guys look for), I will give you a breif history of the thing, and where it is headed. It is a 4x8 because that is all the space my parents gave me to make a layout (better than nothing). I am modeling the modern Northwest section of the country (Oregon, Washington and B.C.) with BNSF. The yard at the back of the layout is an engine storage facility, and the front is a paper mill complex. All the track is laid down, and every section is in working order. I am begining to lay the balast and other scenic elements at this time, along with buying more engines and building up freight consists (maybe even an Amtrak cascade consist as well!)

PICTURES!!! (Please excuse the messy layout :eek:ops: )
-6867 up close
-6967 side profile
-6338
-Picture of the engine complex, with the Dash8 and SP switcher in its "house":) :)
-SP switcher from the side (up close)

*So, I should probably tell you about the two snoots. I bought them from my LHS for SUPER cheap (athearn blue box kit) and thought it would be cool to build them up real nice. So, I need some help in regards to detailing. First, 6867 is alot more finished than 6338, so, what else do you think I need to add to 6867? Number boards is the obvious thing, and some of the equipment needs to be added to the roof (any ideas where I can get that stuff), but can you guys think of anything else? Also, regarding 6338, I have been having a ton of issues getting front handrails for these things. Has anyone else been having these problems? They are like too high, and just don't fit. Oh, I have the SP switcher becuase I thought it looked cool, and it sort of fit into my scheme. Thank you in advance for your help!!*

:) :)

Heya,

First order of business when doing detailing would be to take a look at the prototype's photos, which can be found here: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoPicture.aspx?id=17781

Looking at those, I would add the following to your Athearn loco:

Details Associates:

1508 MU Hoses (goes on the pilot, front and rear.)
1803 Sinclair radio antenna (you need to build an antenna platform for it out of .015" styrene, and it goes on the cab roof).
2202 Grab Irons
2206 Lift Rings (goes onto various locations on the roof)
2211 Coupler cut bar (goes on the pilot, front and rear, above the coupler)
2314 Windshield Wipers
2217 Curved Grab Iron
(goes on the rear long hood, around the last radiator fan)
2309 Vapor type air conditioner (goes onto cab roof)
2504 0.012" Brass Wire (Use this to bend the plumbing for the airbrake cylinders.)

Details West:
127 underframe-mounted bell (goes in front of the fuel tank on the fireman's side)
155 Plow (goes on the front pilot. The engine looks naked without it!)

Get some 30AWG insulated wire and use that to make the MU cable, and maybe use some sand filler hatches to make the MU receptacles. These go on the pilot, front and rear.

That particular Bunsuf unit also has ditch lights.. Both DA and DW have ditch light kits, but you will have to figure a way to light them. Fiber optics maybe.

You can get all those detail parts from places like Discount Trains Online, Walthers, etc.

Hope this helps! :thumb:

Hey the layout looks great!

Are you running regular DC? Or DCC?

At least you have a larger layout than me! I'm running a 4'x7', so be greatful you have a 4'x8'!

Please keep the pictures coming!

I don't have DCC on the layout, just the standard DC. Just got back from my train shop with a pile of detail parts :) :)!!

Nice stuff! I'm stuck in the same 4x8. DCC is cool, i have it, but the main problem is upgrading your fleet. I only have 4 DCC engines ( out of more or less 34, although to be fair many of those aren't DCC ready) and 2 of them came with DCC already. Its something i'd suggest doing now if you have any leftover money from the holidays. NCE powercab is the best bet if you want to go that route.

do you have block wiring installed? Also I like that building in the first picture. which kit is that?

OUTSTANDING start. 4'x8''s aren't always a bad thing. I have seen some that would really knock your socks off. It's all in how you do it and you're well on your way with this one. Mighty fine start.

Welcome aboard.

(And yes, we're photo whores over here) :D

green_elite_cab, I am pretty sure I am going to stay away from DCC until I get my own layout in my own house a little while down the road. The building in the picture is Walthers Superior Paper Mill Complex.

I will post pictures today of the detailing of the snoot.
