Welcome aboard and sorry that I cannot help out to much in the RR department. There is a Rail head community here that can help you out with questions. There are some free stuff in the buildings and architecture side for dioramas, but you have to make 10 viable postings before you have access to the downloads. In the meantime check out http://www.ss42.com/ and on the left column under free paper toys, click on that. It will bring you to a categorize selection of freebies and it includes trains, wagons and buildings. Choose something and post your works here for us to enjoy in your endeavors.
