Harley-Davidson Model 7A

For some time now I have been working on a model of an early Harley-Davidson motorcycle, the Model 7A "Silent Grey Fellow" of 1911, and have had a thread running at papermodelers.com describing my travails. Zathros has persuaded me that there may be some over here who may not have seen it, and may be interested in the results.

The prototype comes from just 7 years after the very first Harley-Davidson, and shows an intermediate stage between the very early "motorised bicycles" and the classic motorcycles of the 1920s. It retains the prominent leather drive belt and large wheel pulley of the period, soon to be abandoned in favour of chain drive.

The model is to scale 1:14, and measures approximately 150mm long x 40mm wide x 75mm high (6" x 1.5" x 3"). It is all paper and glue except for thread for the wheel spokes and two (hidden) wooden rods.

I have worked all the parts (around 400 of them) into a double-size kit which I have placed in the download section both here and at papermodelers.com. The resulting scale of 1:7 is very close to that of the Yamaha "Realistic" series of modern motorcycles, so it makes an interesting comparison. I hope that some of you will try it, and let us know how you get on.

I love the crisp, clear look of unpainted model (we call that "standard" in Poland)

I feel so honored, and privileged that you posted your masterpiece here! I just fired up my Suzuki today, and I know I will be thinking of this model when I pick up my son from school today. He feels like the kid with the "cool Dad", when I pick him up on the bike.

He's 12 years old, and when I showed him your model, he just did not believe it was paper. he was shocked with what you did with the Kawasaki model. 12 year old's are hard to impress. They are brought up in a virtual reality. It is in only because he has seen the models that I make, that his disbelief is so justified!! :)

You might have fun checking out Jim's Harley, if not the same model, really close, but it is all metal!

p.s. I know loading pictures here is a pain in the butt. I will make another request that the increase the number of uploads. Thanks for the patience and the model you have shown.

    Hi Alan,

Great job, and I cant believe it's paper. I'm starting a couple sheetmetal motorcycle sculptures in a week or so and one of them will be this one.

Thanks for posting the clear, crisp photos.

I agree. A beautiful work. He could have sold that model for a good sum, but he generously made it available free! Every model Alan has made has this quality. a Master designer, in my opinion and of a lot of others too. Make sure you download the instructions of you will be bummed out. Though you could always get them here, but it's kind of silly to download a model without instructio0nsl :)

Although at the moment, not to reach 10 posts, I can not get off this model, I want to do in the immediate future.

Encourage the teacher to come up "alang" more pictures of the assembly process, step by step, in order to learn from the greats.

Sorry for my boldness and Thank you.

There are instructions that can and should be downloaded in the "Downloads" section with the model. Alan did a great job on the instructions. He even has instructions for the jig necessary for making the spokes on the wheels.

This is truly a work of art. The detail is wonderful. I am tempted to make the engine from aluminum, as well as other components, but when I see how great it looks in paper, I realize there is no need to. :)
