Handrail Spacing in HO?

    Generally speaking, what scale distance should you leave between a handrail step and the side/top of whatever rolling stock or loco you are putting it on? It seems that something like 0.040" should do the trick (approx. 3.5 scale inches in HO), but I'm curious to find out what different people use for this distance.

    Someone on rmr told me to adjust the distance until it 'looks good', but this doesn't help very much.

    Just had a thought --- I can measure it on the GO Train loco on the way home today!

    I used to use a 0.030" shim that I cut to fit the hood ends of EMD locomotives. I've gotten pretty used to the distance I expect to see, so anymore I just position grabs until they look right.
