can any one tell me what is the most grade i can run in lionel o-scale. thanks jim
It depends on the locomotive. The postwar Lionels with magnetraction could do some incredibly steep grades (more than 6 percent).
The traditional Lionel trestle set goes up 6 inches in 12 track sections, which, assuming a length of 8.75 inches per track section, works out to a 5.71% grade with O27 track. With O31 track, which is about 10 inches long, it works out to a 5% grade.
Some Lionel engines are better pullers than others and will fare better on these grades. My low-end Lionel 1110 probably won't pull much on these grades, but a 681 turbine with magnetraction would have a field day.
