Nope - sorry 
seen it done! Its a GREAT idea to revisit though as it works really well. Only problem I have is bonding the metal to paper. I just always have horrible luck with CA..... The only thing that ever works 100% for me is bonding my index finger to my nostril HAH!
One really nice thing is you can use a sharpie or other permanent markers to color them how you want - just need to be careful in handling as it still tends to come off. paint works too of course. Thickness on many staples looks just about right for many scales too.

I have used staples as steps and handles as well. I also have used my jewelry pliers on paper clips and assorted wires bent into the shape needed to create handles as well as steps on the side of vehicles and ships.
