I can across this while I was searching for ideas for structures on my layout. I thought it was pretty cool and a very clever way to set it up. The mechanism is a CD ROM ejection motor and uses the rack and pinion parts to move the door up and down the channels on both sides of the door. If you want to see how it was done there is a link in the "more info" section which actually provides a tutorial. Be warned though, it leads to another forum.

I know some people who work in IT, I'm pretty sure I can get one or two old drives off one of them and cannibalize it for parts. Something I'd like to try when I get to building some stuff. Could be fun. You could hook it up to a photo sensor, and some LEDS, so when a car approaches the sensor automatically opens the door and changes the LEDS from red to green. Could be a neat little animation.
