With only a 3 month production run and only 13 units built, the NW-5 is unknown to many model railroaders and railfans. Powered by a 12 cylinder, 1,000 hp 567B 1000hp prime mover, the NW-5's were erected between 12/46 and 2/47, with 10 going to GN (later BN), 2 to Union Belt of Detroit and 1 to the Southern Rwy. Many survive today, some working for their 4th owners. Basically a NW-2 on a lengthened frame and a steam generator compartment behind the cab, EMD billed it as a "light roadswitcher" suitable for working the yard, light freights and mixed or dedicated passenger trails.
