Drywall compound

    I use sheetrock compound myself. Works great for me. I typically slather it down on top of foam cut to a rough shape for the scenery base, so I have no problems with it. It can take a couple coats though, to avoid cracks as it dries, but thats no biggie

    Oh, I also use joint compound to make river surfaces. I smooth it on reasonably flat, dab at it with a small sponge to make waves, let dry, paint, and then cover with acrylic gloss medium.
