Do you have permission from the original creator to modify their work?

Half the work in making a papermodel is the shape. You can't use someone else's as a guide without ripping off their work.

If you want to model that, my recommendation is to use a 3d program like blender or sketchup to make a 3d model and then use pepakura maker to turn it into papercraft.

There is no harm in asking the designer if you can modify their original work. In fact if you offer to let him have the altered design to distribute as he sees fit you will likely get a ton of help :)

Also modifying an unfolded file into a new shape willl be darn near impossible. You pretty much need to get the 3d model and work from that. Once again the original designer can probably help!

Now if you want to just recolor you can probably do that for your OWN PERSONAL use. However getting the designers permissions is the preference. Then you might even be able to give it to him for public release. It feels good to release a model people want :)
