    Shimada LEM

Bengt, here's the LEM file. I see someone else already came up with the shuttle. As for sdk2knbk, that's just my email address name. The first online name I used was "scottk", but when I started to get someone else's mail (including porn spam), I changed it to something more distinctive (My wife's and my own initials, "2" for 2nd acct name, and abbrevieated last name.)

This thread has "almost" inspired me to take a crack at the Fortezza shuttle. Why "almost"? I printed the sheets some time ago, but a couple have since been damaged, a couple others didn't print right, and I'm still out of ink! Maybe I'll try it anyway, since it sounds like I might need something to practice on first, anyway.

Shimada´s Lunar Module Ascent Stage Model

    Hi Scott,

Thanks for posting the file - however, I can only get the last four pages (from p. 6 - 9), after decompressing the zip file. The first five (p. 1 - 5) are completely blank.
Either it´s something wrong with the file or with my programs. I run Acrobat Reader 7.0 on an eMac and I can open any other pdf-file so there shouldn´t be any problem there . . .

Could you have a look at your end?

    Much obliged,
    Bengt

PS. The model looks good - very detailed. A descent stage would probably not be to difficult to do, but the 'spider legs' . . .

Hmmm, still opens Ok for me (I use ACDsee, which opens the zip file without extracting the contents.) This time I'll just post the extracted pdf. The page that are blank on your first copy are the instructions, you do have all of the parts. Let me know if it works this time. BTW, I've been unable to open a good copy of the tile pattern file from earlier in the thread, maybe our problems are a site glitch?

    Sorry, Scott,

Same thing again - at least I got the parts files.
I get a message saying: "Looking for updates" when I open the pdf with Reader 7.0. Perhaps I should use an earlier version of Acrobat (as the model is made in 2002)?

Could you convert the instruction pages 1 - 5 to Word format?

    Bengt :-D

FYI, they all read OK for me. Perhaps it's an Asian font missing sort of thing?

BTW, why the all white models? Do they intend for you to color them youtself?

Bengt, I think your Adobe Reader needs an upgrade for japanese characters.
Please try downloading the latest version (free anyway), and then it have to let you download the japanese chars.

    Thanks, Rick and Gerardo,

That could be it - I´ll try downloading a newer version and hopefully get an Asian font.

I´m glad for this tip - I´ve had some problems with Trotskiy´s site, too.

    White Models

I don´t know why he made them all white, really.
Perhaps he is an architect student or something and don´t have the means to paint the patterns and color schemes.
I find that architect models are often all white for display purposes - it´s often the form that´s the most important thing.

Any other ideas? - good night from Stockholm (at two o´clock in the morning - yawn!)

    Glossy paper for shuttles?

Any of you guys that have built/are building any of the shuttles:

The Fortezza instructions talk about using glossy paper for some of the sheets, but enough threads here have talked about all the downsides of using glossy paper that makes me want to avoid it.

Have any of you tried it? If so what brand and how did it work? Or do you just hit it with a gloss spray once it's done?

    Hi Rick,

I had my sheets laser-printed on a semi-glossy printing paper in a larger size (about twice the Letter size).
I avoid glossy photo papers because they are not bright white - for example Epson´s glossy paper has a slightly off cyan-colored hue, which isn´t so suitable here, if you want to mix two different papers.

So I use the same paper all the way through and mount the parts that should be stiffer to thick card.

    Bengt

PS. (edited in). If you want to get a shiny surface, some people use fixative or glossy spray. But beware, don´t use WATER based spray!!!

That's the #1 problem of the Marscenter Shuttle cargo bay doors... The front & rear former details doesn't match the shape of the attachment points outlined on the rear cockpit portion of the cargo bay...

I'm planning to do a fix on mine when I build a new set of doors for mine, by using some details on the rear cockpit...

Does the shuttle has the square black tile dot over the front cockpit windows????

Hans, you shuttles is looking great . I hope you will be able to fix the problems.

I would absolutely NOT recommend using glossy paper. The other threads have pretty much covered it, but here are my main problems:

    1. Impossible to glue except with cryanoacetates (superglues)
    2. Very brittle
    3. Smudge like crazy...

That's kind of what I was thinking. Spray it with Krylon glossy afterwards maybe....

Thanks for the pics! Maybe I can use that to plan ahead before assembly goes too far. But then again, it'd be hard to know what to do ahead of actually putting the doors together exactly where the fit problems will be...

    Big Shuttle

I need to learn to translate pages I can't read BEFORE I say something about them. I didn't translate this page; , so I didn't realize the shuttle on it is actually 1/24, not 1/50. That's why I said the Shimada shuttle was HUGE before, since this one is enlarged from it. Altavista says "Space shuttle "Enterprise" yardstick 1:24 this model be based on the structural drawing PAPER STS of Hisato Shimada (Website) I set LED into the cockpit behind the most important displays. The finished model will measure a length of approx. 1,50m. Soon geht's further..."

    Several pix from the page....
