I hope this isn't a stupid question,How can you tell if a sound decoder is burnt out?

I don't know much, but you need to do process of elimination. Do other Loco's work with the same controller ? Does the loco work on DCC but just not the sound ? Can you test the speaker with another decoder ?
I don't have any other dcc locos running. the engine does nothing.thanks for your reply.I think i'll just put it away for now this is an ac12 Key4-8-8-4 brass cab forward engine SP #4294
