My son has a White Pass and Yukon Route Mikado (thanks to grandpa - purchased in Skagway) that he'd like converted to DCC. It's a nice little engine, but I am somewhat tenative on opening the thing up. I figure the standard digitrax is the way to go (the 123 or 163 I think).

Anyone done this or have tips on how to do it without permanently ruining the loco...? Pictures would be nice. Googling hasn't turned up much real content.

For those locos, I would pay Tony's to do it unless you are an expert. I had a bad experience trying to decoder one of those, the loco was just never the same and runs terribly now. I have it parked in the yard, and play with the headlight functions. The motor should be isolated already, but the taking apart and putting back together are the hard parts. Just my $.02.
