Has anyone seen the kind of Snow plow used on many conrail engines like these?

these are the units i'm working on, and i cannot find the snow plow for these locomotives. None of them i find have that notch like the GP38 ( wich seems to be on almost all Conrail locomotives), and i can't find a match.

also, there seem to be pilot foot board or something on my locomotives. Do i need to remove these, or is the plow supposed to install over them?

I ordered the closest i could find on walthers last week, and its still a dissappointment. I have an overland models detail part that is a brass snow plow. I might be able to file it down. that snow plow itself doesn't seem to belong to any locomotive either!

Heya Green,

The plow on CR GP38 #7868 was actually the same one used on Amtrak SDP40Fs back in the 1970s: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=170995

Details West used to make one, but they discontinued it. They also discontinued the plow that goes on the F40PHs, which is bigger but has the same notches on the sides. :( I wonder if they got something against Amtrak or what. :D

Anyway, you can actually modify a DW #155 plow to look like the Amtrak plow-- Just carefully file the notches into the plow. I'll be starting a CR GP38-2 project soon and that's what I'm going to do.

The plow on CR SD40 #6345 looks almost identical to the DW #155 as well. You just have to file the sides a bit to get the right contour. :thumb:

And to mount the plows, you need to file smooth the pilot face. No footboards under the plows.

Hope this helps!

that or they dislike government! (conrail not going private until the mid 80s right?)

Yeah i might be able to modify the 155 ( I have a plow i can modify for that already though) for the GP38, but on that SD40, for some reason its fully flat and square at the bottom, with no notches.

thanks for the advice guys, i'll see what i can do!
