Chemical Coloring of Castings

I used vinegar to remove corrosion from a valve and pilot casting of a Lionel 2026 Loco. Usually vinegar works really well but this one was real bad. Now it is back to the color of an original casting, silver-gray. Does someone know the details of chemical coloring (blackening) so I can get it back to looking like it was when purchased? Or is it much easier to just paint it?

Hello oldtoy, welcome to the gauge.
There is a chemical on the market called blacken it, it's very similar to anodizing.
